  • Driving Privileges

    In North Carolina, students under 18 can lose their driver’s license if they:

    • Drop  out of school;
    • Fail to make adequate progress (passing at least 3 classes each semester);
    • Commit certain offenses resulting in suspension.

    Dropout Prevention/Driver’s License Legislation

    North Carolina House Bill 769 became effective December 1, 1997, and reflects a coordinated statewide effort to motivate and encourage students to complete high school. This legislation requires that a student’s driving permit or license be revoked if a student is unable to maintain adequate progress or drops out of school. Adequate progress is defined as passing 75% (3 out of 4) of all courses and is determined by first-semester grades and second-semester grades for schools on block scheduling.

  • Lose Control, Lose Your License Legislation

    North Carolina Senate Bill 57, which became effective July 1, 2000, requires that a student's driving permit or license be revoked for one year (365 days) if a student is given a suspension for more than 10 consecutive days or an assignment to an alternative educational setting for more than 10 consecutive days for one of the following reasons:

    • The possession or sale of an alcoholic beverage or an illegal controlled substance on school property;
    • The possession or use on school property of a weapon or firearm that resulted in disciplinary action under
    • G.S. 115C-391 (d1) or that could have resulted in that disciplinary action if the conduct had occurred in a public school; or
    • The physical assault on a teacher or other school personnel on school property.

    Copies of your driver's license, license plate, and insurance information must be uploaded before students are distributed a parking pass.  No parking space assignment or parking pass can be issued until all information with dates indicating the information is valid has been turned into the office and submitted.

  • General Guidelines:

    • A parking tag (permit) is $50.00 regardless of when it is purchased. It is nonrefundable. Online payment through the student parking application is the only payment option.  A lost tag may be replaced one time for $20.
    • The hangtag must hang from the rearview mirror with the tag number facing outward and be clearly visible from the outside of the vehicle.
    • The hang tag is specific to the vehicle and driver.  It is not acceptable to place the hang tag into another vehicle or to allow a different driver to use the hangtag in your vehicle. Should you puchase a new vehicle or need to drive a different vehicle from your household you will need to contact the school prior to swaping the hang tag.
    • Payment for parking does not guarantee a parking space; meeting all specified requirements is necessary for securing a spot.
    • All parking is first-come first-served in all lots.  NO STUDENTS are permitted to park in the Staff/Visitor lots.
    • Students must have a current driver's license to complete the student parking application and purchase a student parking pass.  Students must then continue to pass 75% of their course load each semester to retain parking and driving privileges.
    • Students accumulating more than six unexcused absences and five parental excused absences combined in a class during a semester risk losing their parking privileges, regardless of the semester's timeline. Attendance policies mandate a minimum class attendance time. Failure to attend classes jeopardizes parking privileges.
    • Students parking on campus may lose their parking privileges after the second In-School Suspension or Out-of-School Suspension. Upon the first suspension, a bus will be provided for transportation. However, a second suspension will lead to the forfeiture of parking privileges. Students are expected to demonstrate good judgment while driving on campus and during school-related activities.
